- Teams start on opposite sides of the court.
- There is one ball in the middle
and a female from each team has one ball. All players must start
touching the wall.
- When the whistle blows, anyone is free to grab the ball in the middle.
There is no protection when you are in the middle of the court and anyone can
hit you.
- The female must throw first. If you don't have any females on your
team, The other team gets both balls and throws first. In addition, I suggest
some personal reflection on why it's such a sausage fest on your side.
Just saying.
- The team with 2 balls has until a 10 count to throw all balls that are on their side. Balls that are not thrown in time are forfeited to the other side. The ball does not need to be picked up for the count to start. If your team has more balls than players, the count will only apply to the the same number of balls as players. (ie, One player will have a 10 count to throw one ball. Then another 10 count to throw the next one.) If you have one ball, you can hold it or ignore it on your side forever. The referee will only count aloud starting at 5 or 6. If the ref deems the game is going too slowly, they may speed up the count. This is up to the ref's discretion.
- If you get hit by a throw that hasn't bounced off any object
(wall, floor, etc),
you are out.
- You can deflect the ball with a ball of your own, but the throw is still live (same as NDL). Examples:
- Cory throws at Steve, Steve deflects the ball with a ball in his hands and Carrie catches it. Cory is out
- Cory throws at Steve, Steve deflects the ball and gets hit and then Carrie catches it. Cory AND Steve are out and Carrie's catch counts. (Steve cannot come back in from the catch.)
- Cory throws at Steve who deflects the ball back to Cory and Cory catches it. Steve is out and Cory brings a player back in
- Cory blasts Steve in the chest which (due to his rock solid pecks) bounce back to Cory and Cory catches it. Steve is out and Cory brings a player back in
- Cory blasts Steve in the chest which (due to his rock solid pecks) bounce back to Cory and hits Cory. Steve and Cory are out
- Cory hits Steve which then hits Carrie and Michelle catches it. Catch is good but Cory, Steve and Carrie are all out
- If you catch a ball without it touching the part of the gym (wall, net, floor, etc), the thrower
is out and you get a player back in. The first player that was hit is the
first player back in.
- When all players have been eliminated, your team has won the game.
- The referee has the final say, even if the they have the rules wrong.
As mentioned above, the team with 2 or more balls on their side has a 10 count
to throw all balls.
If your team has all 3 balls, a woman must throw the third. If no women are
available to throw, the 3rd ball cannot be picked up until both balls have been released. (All 3 balls still must be thrown in 10 seconds!!!!)
If the referee finished to say the word "ten" during the count, the throw does not count and the other team gets the ball. All balls must be thrown by the 10 second count.
"Pinch" throws are not allowed. Similarly, only actual throws count. Kicking or spiking (like in volleyball) don't count.
A suicide throw is then the player jumps over the center line and throws the
ball before they land on the opponents side. Sorry, you can't do it.
If you do, the throw doesn't count and you are out.
If you are clumsy and step over the line after the ball was released,
the throw will count. If you step over the line before you
throw, it does not count and you are out.
You can do this, but if in the process of deflecting you drop
the ball, you are out. Catching the ball you had possession of will save you. Other players can catch the thrown ball which results in a standard catch.
If a ball is on the ground and gets hit, the thrown ball is considered to have bounced and is dead.
The player must demonstrate complete control of the ball before
it touches anything else. If the ball hits the ground and it was caught at the same time, neither the thrower nor the target are out.
If you get hit incidentally after it hits someone else, you are out unless
the ball has hit an inanimate object before hitting you.
If the ball has not hit any inanimate objects and is caught, it counts as
a standard catch and only the catcher of the ball is safe. The thrower and all those hit by it by the balls are out.
The player who received the call against them is allowed one
clarification question after a play happens that
they disagree with. Examples are:
* Did that hit the ground?
* Wasn't the ball already dead?
However, you are not allowed any follow up questions, arguments,
comments or
complaints. Any comments are subject to a technical foul. If you say anything
along the lines of the call being BS or someone cheating, you will be given
a technical foul.
If you get called for a technical for saying something to the other team and
then proceed to argue with the ref (remember, you get one question),
then you will be given a second technical foul and will be done for the night.
Anyone, not just the team captain, is allowed to discuss the rules or
a call in between games.
Not allowed. You can talk trash only if they like it. If they are taking
it seriously and you are talking trash which is pissing them off, you will get
a technical foul. So be sure your comments are well received. The point of
this rule is to ensure that people are having fun and not getting angry.
Regardless of who started it, anyone caught arguing with the other team will
receive a technical.
You are not allowed to touch any ball after you are hit. Exceptions will be
made if there was no way around it.
If you get hit and in the process of walking off the court, prevent
the ball from rolling to the opponents sides, you are subject to receive a technical foul and the ball is forfeited to the other team.
Players that are out are not allowed to interfere with balls in play. This
includes preventing the ball from returning to the other side of the court.
If the ball rolls outside the playing area, it must be placed on the spot is left the court and not thrown to any player.
First technical of the night equals out for the current game and the following game. (The team players short a player that gender.) Second technical of the night equals out for the rest of the night.
A technical foul is described as any aggressive or unsportsmanlike behavior. Excessive behavior (throwing the ball towards the ref, flipping someone off, etc) is cause for immediate ejection for the night. All refs have the authority to call technicals. DiL staff will have final say on whether a play will be suspended the following week. DiL reserves the right to look back at behavior from past weeks games and determine if a player who was not issued a technical or a given a one game suspension and issue the appropriate penalty. (This will be an extremely rare case.)
Face shots are allowed except for men throwing at women. Is that kind of
sexist? Probably. Get over it. The bottom line is that if a guy throws a face shot at a woman, he will get called out. A face shot is considered a ball that hits her face first or would have hit her face if she had not blocked it in self defense. The exceptions are when the female is on her knees looking for a catch or she dodged into it. Here are some examples when women are the target:
| Thrower is out |
If the female is against the back wall or rebounding and gets hit in the face |
| Female is out |
Female dodges into the throw via jumping or ducking |
| Female is out |
If the ball clearly hits the shoulder first and then their face |
| Female is out |
If the target is somewhat close to thrower but the woman is on her knees (all jokes aside) looking to catch, she is not vulnerable. |
If a head shot is called, the ball is dead. The thrower is out regardless because of the head shot.
You cannot go out of bounds (center or both side lines) for during any "active" play. If you do, you will be called out. If the other team is not throwing any where near you, you can go out of bounds to retrieve a ball. However, it is best to have your subs or teammates not in the game retrieve the ball. On the stage side, the boundary is the stage extended and not the sideline. Stepping over the line even an inch will get you called out!
If you catch the ball while in bounds and fall out of bounds, the catch is good and you are out. The important part is that you are in bounds after the catch is complete.
Feel free to run up the wall and do any Matrix-like moves. This is considered
in bounds and should be entertaining to the ref.
You cannot, however, touch anything that is out of bounds. This includes the side walls, top of the stage, bench, players, etc.
Passing the ball is allowed at any time.
As long as you have one person from your team there, game on.
This league is going to be officiated by your peers. Kind of like a jury of your peers, except this pays more per hour. For each game you ref, you receive $7 off the next season. If you are interested in
helping us out,
update your profile! If you are the type of person
that argues with the refs or thinks other people cheat, you are exactly
the type of person we need!
Don't count on having one.
Where possible, the schedule will have double headers to
avoid anyone having a bye week. This means more dodgeball.
Each team will play 8 games and the number of teams that make the players will be determined the league size.
Call it what you want to call it, but racist, sexist and homophobic stuff
will be censored. Unless of course it is more funny than offensive.
Just like OTL,
part of the fun is coming up with funny names, so be creative.
The base number of people on the court are 5 guys and 2 women. If both teams have 6 of one sex, then both teams must play 6 of that sex. If one team has less than the base number, the opposing team can still play with the base number. For example, if one team shows up with 2 guys and 2 women, the opposing team can still play 5 guys and 2 women. This logic continues up to 6 people. You should not have more than 6 guys or 10 players on the floor... This causes the games to be too slow. Women can substitute for guys when considering who plays. They are still counted as women once the game starts.
If the ball is thrown over the blue divider and not at a person,
the ball is forfeited to the other side. (Ref discretion)
Sets are a thing of the past. Every individual game counts, leaving the final score TBD. All games will last exactly 55 minutes and then the timer (built into the speakers) will go off. Everyone in the gym will know time has expired and the games ends immediately. Unfinished games do not count towards the score. (Ties are possible.)
Switch sides every two games.
The following are considered when ranking (in order of importance)
1. Head to head win percentage (amongst all teams tied)
2. Game win percentage (amongst all teams tied)
3. Common opponent win percentage
4. Common opponent set win percentage
Subs are ok if you do not have the minimum number of guys allowed (usually 5) and the other team has more guys. If you have 4 men and bring in one sub, but the other team only has 4 men, neither team is allowed to have a sub. The sub brought in must be OK'ed with the other team prior to the game. Don't expect to bring in a ringer for the playoffs, though. The reason for the strict sub rules is that it can affect other teams not playing and we want to minimize the effects. The same rules apply for women!
All-Stars will be selected as the top male and female overall vote-getters. Voting will open approximately 3 weeks before the game. Players are allowed to vote for 2 male and 2 female players per team. (Note: As the league continues to grow, all teams may not be equally represented at the game). The number of men & women that make the all stars will be similar to the ratio of men & women on each team. The exact ratio will be similar to the make up of the current league and try to mimic a full team.
